Research into Film genre - Post Apocalyps

Post apocalypse is a sub genre of science fiction and is basically where there is an end to civilization. This type of genre can explore themes of desperation, survival and humans and what they do in a time of need, questioning morality and good nature.
Types of post apocalypse films can be from
  • Nuclear war
  • Pandemic
  • Failure of modern technology
  • Extraterrestrial threats
  • Zombies (most common)
Most common films of this genre can be
Dawn of the planet of the Apes
Zombie land
World war Z

Most post apocalypse films focus on the idea of survival a tackle hard decisions.

The costumes are relatively the same being old and dirty looking as if supply's are hard finding new cloths, so for our film we will need to do the same

Another common thing I found in these post apocalypse films was that at the beginning of some of these films they had the idea of terror and desperation through news reports which were fast cut for example in world war Z and it really introduced the film and set the scene for the audience, which I thought was very effective and something we will probably do in our own film. They also had an idea of emptiness, depending on weather they started before or after the event. When a lot of civilisation has been wiped out you loose the natural sound of cars going past and for example you loose electricity which gives a strong sound of quite (if you understand what I mean). This is something which would be hard to show through our own film, but possible. It will help with showing to the audience that this is real.
Something else I noticed was the way the present the characters, as the civilisation is gone, humans tend to be shown to be survivors. For example, killing other humans for the healthiest people, or Mersey killings if someone was hurt or ill. This types of scenes were filmed and shown in a dramatic way to put across the idea of everything being desperate and messed up, so in our film when we film a scene which would be questioning normal social norms and values.
This research into the genre helps me as it gives me an insight into what an audience who are already familiar in the Post Apocalyptic genre would be expecting, and also shows me what is done a lot so gives me idea on something different which could sand out to this audience
