world war Z sound analysis

The music stars with a simple what seems like piano tune, which doesn't sound dangerous or scary, almost peaceful and calming which is surprising considering the genre of the film
Along with the piano tune which sounds just like things are moving on, still not a distressing tune, you get the sound of birds flying, showing nature, but possibly showing to the audience that the birds are flying away?
"morning new" You hear a news woman talking happily and what seems normally which doesn't go along with the picture, there are a lot of repeats of "good morning" after this which give the audience a sense of beginning, still happy and chirpy at this point
The news reports interrupt over each other and sound like normal news but you start to hear a specific subject about weather? the world?
Then the first main news report you hear on the dolphins turning up dead, this DOES go along with what you see which really make the audience focus on what their hearing, this doesn't sound like normal everyday news? you start the hear of the danger the film is about
The news reports stop being interrupting over each other and there is a picture to go along with each one
There is also a subject you start hearing about which could be dangerous "CO2 emissions" then someone being interviewed saying "there is no threat" "trying to determine the cause of death" These news report aren't something the audience would be used to hearing everyday so they start to feel a sense of danger, although the reports are trying to reassure its fine, the audience start to know what
This is very effective along with the music still being calming, a big contrast
A news report on the UN is heard and things are getting more rapid and dangerous as what started off with a happy "good morning" turns into you hearing a man saying we are in danger and there are UN restrictions
The music starts getting faster and more added to it creating a sense of desperation and along with the violent scenes your seeing at the same time the audience can feel the tension rising so much until..
there is a break at the end. Just before it gets too tense, the drums drop, the bass goes away and were back to the contrasting piano tune the calming one which has kept through the whole time. very dramatic and very effective, we want to use this idea in our own film.

The dead un-dead sound analysys

It starts with a single violin sound effect creating tension with the first opening credit being seen
then when you see the man running you get and introduction of drums following with a rapid electric guitar riff
The guitar in this sounds like something from and action movie soundtrack which works perfectly with the running see at the same time
The fast loud drums in the background give it the fast paced it need possibly sounding like footsteps? along with the violin coming back in keeps creating tension
There is a gap in the drums and guitar for a brief few seconds while the camera swoops through the people with guns making the audience feel like something is about to happen... but it doesn't and the drums come in more rapid with the guitar as well letting the audience know that its not over and more action is to come
Where the drums get faster and the guitar becomes more dramatic it surely sounds like everything is about to stop and something big is going to happen! but it doesn't and when the man gets shot there is no real gap in the music and it carry's on, so that the audience don't see it coming and also that its not over and more is to come
But when you see the car pull up the music ends with a quick drum fill and guitar end it lets the audience know that the opening is over now and that the real story is about to begin

opening sequence analysis - The dead un-dead

This opening sequence starts with dramatic running away from the camera, this shows the audience that there is a danger to run away from but not necessarily what the danger is , and also that you cant focus on who is running away so there is not much character development.
It shows them running through waist land and forests which gives a sense to the audience already that things are deserted
There are some what seem like POV shots and not steady camera shots which adds to the desperate and not curtain seance which the film is giving out - who are they running away from? what is the danger?
We are then shown some charterers with guns who are looking like they are looking for someone, are these the people they are running away from? good or bad? with the camera swooping down between them it gives the affect to the audience that they are looking from all directions, possibly danger from all directions?
Its very dark scene which gives a dramatic effect to the audience and scary feel as they cant quite see everything that is going on
There are cut away shots from people looking through the trees - opening credits - back to the people looking through the threes, this makes the audience feel like something is about to happen?
BANG- someone gets shot after the three cut away of people walking through the trees, it is quick and startling after and opening credit which would make the audience jump, and the person they shoot is facing away from the camera poising the question, is this the man we saw running before?

Target audiance reashurch

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/638VJN6

(this same post is both on the group blog and my personal blog)

We used survey monkey to do our target group (teenagers/young adults of both genders) research as it is an easy way of reviewing our results, and we asked our target group, of boys and girls in our year groups (ages 16-18) to click on the link and complete the survey.
As you can see the majority of our target group has heard of the film genre apocalypse, this mean that we needed to make our film different, something that would stand out as they were used the genre.
In question 2 again the majority of the answers said that they enjoyed this film genre, this also shows that our audience will know what to expect so we need to follow the norms, but at the same time we need to make out film stand out and interesting for the audience.
Question 3 asked our audience about the main character changes. From the answers it seems like we got a good reaction, so we will defiantly continue with our main characters being female as we think this is effective and will help us make our film stand out and different from the general "post - apocalypse genre.
The reaction from changing the main enemies to something that wont necessary be dead seems to be what we expected which is that it will be slightly controversial, but not a problem for our audience, if we do It well we think that it will defiantly make our film stand out and effective. The reaction shows that out audience will enjoy this vital change
With the final question showing that our target audience is pretty interested in our film, this and the other main ideas show that our target audience likes the ideas we have and that we have pressure to do it well, but if we do it will  be very effective. We then showed them a brief viewing of our half completed opening sequence, and the review we got were positive and they said our themes we were trying to show were effective so far

The dead undead opening credits order

In The dead Undead their opening credits went in this order
  • Production companies
  • names
  • special appearance
  • directer of photography
  • origonal score
  • Production dsighner
  • Edited by
  • written by
  • produced by
  • Directed by
These credits are static letters on a solid background and not superimposed on the action. This brings a pause to the action and the music so the audience can focus on the words
I personally think these types of credits mixed in with the type of action and music don't work too well and prefer superimposed credits, Although it does make the audience focus on it.

From this i would say the the longer more in depth opening credits are more effective as look more professional with more names

Cabin in the woods opening credits order

Cabin in the woods did the opening credits in this order
  • production companies
  • *person*'s film
  • names
  • Directed by
Cabin in the woods did a lot less names and producers in their opening sequence which i don't think is as effective

Representation of Gender

Gender Representation in our film

Most females in our genre are represented as helpless, week and if they are the fighting strong female who can help themselves and fight, they are usually at some point sexualised. This is very stereotypical for woman and we didn't want to do this. Also in the majority of apocalypse films the main characters arn't not female and the film focuses on male protagonists

In some video games for example where you can play as a female they are not presented as sexualised or week, for example Ellie. obviously video games are much different to films, however this game in particular I liked the way they showed Ellie being a strong/not sexualised female  This is the inspiration we wanted for our main female characters.
Ellie from the award winning game "The last of us"
We will have no love theme, or males being the hero, just the two girls running and showing that their main want is to survive, stopping at nothing

Distribution

Distribution -

In film means sharing the film in different ways across different tools so that the audience can view the film,

Who would distribute our film?

When looking into distribution, we looked at a handful of apocalyptic/ dystopic films to see if any names were recurring.

20th Century Fox has distributed more films in our genre, titles including the 4 films of the 'Alien' franchise, 'Independence Day' and '28 Weeks Later' and the 'planet of the apes' franchise. Producers like Disney for example wouldn't fit our film, as they are not dark mostly based on children films, our film is based for much older target audience, and not a light hearted film. Based on this, 20th Century Fox would be more likely to distribute our film.

However

Realistically we would present our film to film festivals such as British Horror film festival              or take one action film festival
Hopefully going to one of these British festivals we could get our film noticed and then hopefully after that distributed for others to see
